It’s Tip Tuesday! This week we are talking about tips for Green Living in Santa Clarita. We all have heard the term “Going Green”.  It’s described as making more environmentally friendly decisions such as to “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.” Here in Santa Clarita we are blessed with beautiful scenery, such as the Los Angeles National Mountains surrounding us, to more local parks, walking paths, and lakes.  What most people dont know is, that while Going Green is a great way to maintain the beauty of Santa Clarita, it also can, in some cases, increase your home’s value as well as save you money. Here are some tips for Green Living in Santa Clarita:

  1. Tankless or Solar Water Heaters: While reducing your carbon footprint, these water heaters can drastically reduce your water and heating bill, all while saving water. With the current drought conditions in California and potential water price increases, this is a welcomed alternative to a traditional water heater.
  2. Fluorescent or LED Indoor Lighting: These are traditionally more expensive than the average light bulb,  but these options are worth the investment. There are a wide variety in shape, color, size and will fit almost any lighting source. The big bonus with these, is that their lifespan last significantly longer, essentially giving you full return on your investment.
  3. Install a Programmable Thermostat: These devices save up to 10% on your summer cooling bill. Meaning, they pay for themselves in a matter of months.  Our favorite product were seeing lately is the Nest Learning Thermostat. This device syncs to your wifi, and automatically programs itself. Leave it on for a week and it will learn about your living environment, the season, and adjust itself accordingly. Saving you money, and one less thing you have to worry about.
  4. Replace Windows: While replacing windows can be a bit pricy. When selling your home, it is one of the many things buyers take into consideration. Energy efficient windows cut down on your utility bill, as well as helping eliminate outside noise. With many different styles available today, you are sure to find something that is esthetic pleasing for any style as well as saving you money.
  5. Energy Efficient HVAC Unit: This can dramatically decrease your monthly utility bill. But, before taking on this project, we suggest smaller tips first. Such as resealing windows, installing energy efficient doors, insulating upstairs, and sealing air ducts. With these small suggestions done first, you will get the full benefit of an Energy Efficient HVAC unit.

While all of these upgrades to a home can cost money, in the long run, they pay themselves off. They also can add value to your home, while creating more interest from buyers when you put your home on the market.
